The Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy opened in September 2012, bringing together five Portland schools, the Grove, Brackenbury and Underhill, Southwell and Royal Manor Arts College.
We are a non-selective, non-fee paying, co-educational state school providing an outstanding learning environment for young people aged 4 – 16, together with Foundation Stage units including nursery and reception age children.
The Academy offers an exciting curriculum, individually tailored to the needs of each student. Building on the friendly family atmosphere that our predecessor schools had a reputation for, our students progress at the best possible pace for them as individuals.
Reflecting the unique resources and position of Portland, the Academy specialises in Environmental Science and in Sports Science. We also place particular emphasis on Entrepreneurship - giving students the confidence to achieve whatever they want in life.
IPACA is sponsored by educational charity The Aldridge Foundation, which helps young people to reach their potential and contribute to improving their communities. The Foundation provides practical help and advice to the Academy, assisting us to learn from best practice nationally and internationally in ensuring we deliver the best possible educational opportunities for our students.
Dorset County Council is the Co-sponsor and has a strong track record of delivering high quality school improvement services, innovative curriculum development and outstanding schools. The Local Authority has played a major role in helping to shape IPACA's vision and as a Co-sponsor ensures the Academy can benefit from being part of the Dorset family of schools.
Professor Stephen Heppell, visionary educationalist, is Patron of IPACA. Stephen is recognised internationally as a leader in the fields of learning, new media and technology, and is Chair in New Media Environments, Centre for Excellence in Media Practice, Bournemouth University.
As an Academy we are a state school funded directly and solely by the Department for Education and administered by a charitable Academy Trust. We are not administered or funded by the Local Authority, or our Sponsors. Academy status allows us the freedom to promote enterprise and innovation, while offering a broad and balanced curriculum to students of all abilities.
IPACA is led by Vice-Principals Rob Russell, Stuart McLeod, Darren Marklew and its Governing Body. This body includes Sponsor Governors, Staff Governors, Local Authority Governors, Parent Governors and coopted governors selected by the Academy Trust.
